THE best performing primary schools in the borough have been revealed after this year's key stage two SATs results were released.

Figures for schools in St Helens, which have been published by the Department for Education (DfE), show that many are performing above the national average of pupils meeting the expected standard of results – which is 64 per cent.

The average for St Helens, is just one per cent lower at 63 per cent.

SATs tests are taken by year six pupils in their final year of primary school and measure children's reading, writing and maths skills.

St Julie's Catholic Primary School in Eccleston topped the charts in the borough with 91 per cent of its pupils achieving the expected standard closely followed by St Mary's Catholic Primary School with 90 per cent and Bleak Hill Primary School with 89 per cent.

St Julie's results showed that pupils were 2.2 per cent above average in reading, 3.4 per cent well above average in writing and 2.6 per cent being above average in maths.

Head teacher of St Julie's, Anne Hodgson, said: "Obviously we are absolutely delighted with the outcome of the results but this result is down to the hard work of our students, the hard work of our staff and governors.

"We are very pleased with this result."

9. Thatto Heath Community Primary School – 78 per cent met expected standard

10. Grange Valley Primary School – 77 per cent met expected standard

League tables published by the DfE also rank schools by the percentage of children reaching the expected standard in the individual areas of reading, writing and maths.

The five lowest performing in the area are Rectory CofE Primary School with 35 per cent, Merton Bank Primary School and St Anne's Catholic Primary School with 38 per cent, Lyme Community Primary School with 39 per cent, St John Vianney Catholic Primary School and St Austin's Catholic Primary School with 41 per cent and Sutton Manor Community Primary School and Holy Cross Catholic Primary School with 46 per cent.
