STUDENTS from Leigh College have taken part in a health kick to get more people as active as possible.

There were 32 students who walked at Pennington Flash Country Park, in Leigh, as part of the month-long MOVEvember scheme.

The St Helens Road park one-mile route was named the Lunchtime Loop.

MOVEvember was run by Wigan and Leigh College, Inspiring healthy lifestyles and The Carbon Landscape Partnership to get hundreds of people out for a lunchtime walk at one of their nearby green spaces.

Sport lecturer Warren Turley said “Staff at Wigan and Leigh College feel the lunchtime loop is a fantastic way to engage our students and staff into participating in more gentle exercise and being more socially active.

"The walk allows both our students and staff to enjoy the natural surroundings as well as promoting a healthier lifestyle both physically and mentally.”

Recent improvements by the local authority in the area has allowed more people with wheelchairs, zimmer frames and mobility issues to access the park.

Carbon Landscape community engagement officer Jenny Griggs said: “It has been great to be working with various partners to get people out and about in their local green spaces.

“Many people who work at or visit Leigh Sports Village don’t know just how close it is to the beautiful Pennington Flash.”

The Carbon Landscape Partnership is a five-year, £3.2 million, Heritage Lottery funded partnership working together with 14 project partners and led by Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

Inspiring healthy lifestyles sports engagement officer Richard Smith said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Wigan and Leigh College to get more people out and active within the borough’s green spaces.

"The one mile ‘Lunchtime Loop’ is perfect for students and staff from the Leigh College campus to enjoy the outdoors over lunchtime as well as local families, dog walkers, running groups and members of our leisure centre.”
