A 70-year-old woman has died after a crash on the East Lancashire Road yesterday afternoon, Thursday.
Police were called to the Liverpool-bound carriageway at the junction of Catchdale Moss Lane in St Helens at around 5.40pm where a blue Vauxhall Agila car and a white VW Tiguin car had collided.
A passenger in the Agila was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Agila and two other passengers were taken to hospital. One woman's condition is described as serious but not life threatening and two others were treated for minor injuries.
The driver of the VW Tiguan was also treated in hospital for minor injuries.
The family of the woman who died have been informed.
Specialist officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the crash and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Roads Policing Sergeant Bryan Watts said: "We are keen to hear from any witnesses to this incident and welcome any information, including home CCTV or dashcam footage, which may assist our enquires."
After being closed following the incident, the affected roads were re-opened in the early hours of this morning, Friday.
