A MAN was arrested after a car veered off a road and ploughed through a garden fence before hitting a house.

The crash, involving a black Mercedes Benz 4x4, happened on Borough Road, St Helens at 7.45pm on Saturday evening.

Police say it is fortunate that a woman in her 90s, who lives at the house, was not injured.

Police confirmed a roadside breath test of the driver was carried out at the scene.

The car demolished a road sign and smashed through the garden fence

A 42-year-old man from Stockbridge Village was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Sergeant Gerard Farley from Roads Policing said: “Luckily the elderly resident, a woman in her 90s, was not injured in this incident.

“As you can see here luckily no one was injured but it would have been a very different matter if anyone had been walking along the pavement or had been in the garden.”
