ST Helens’ ambitions to host a series of matches at the Rugby League World Cup 2021 has moved a step closer after impressing organisers.

St Helens Council has been informed it has successfully passed the initial bid stage, competing against 79 other offers, and will now make a final submission before the formal determination of host locations in early 2019.

It is proposed for St Helens to host up to three men’s games at the Totally Wicked Stadium and at least one match at the women’s tournament.

A council report says the bid, a joint bid between the local authority and Saints, was “well-received” and “commended” by the Rugby League World Cup team.

If the bid is successful, it is expected that each match could be worth up to £4.5 million to the borough.

The report says: “The Rugby League have commissioned independent studies that place the economic value of hosting World Cup group matches at between £2.4 million and £4.5 million.

“Coupled with the direct economic impact, each match will be broadcast live by the BBC, raising the profile of the borough both nationally and internationally.”

It is also hoped St Helens can host a top international side during the tournament.

The council has said it would “relish” the opportunity to host a nation such as Tonga, currently ranked the fourth best international rugby league side in the world.

Saints’ training base at Cowley Language College and the training facility at Ruskin Drive Sports Village are offered as part of the bid.

The bid also includes a proposal to support bids to the multi-million-pound Rugby League World Cup 2021 Legacy Fund to improve the community game infrastructure.

If the bid is successful, Saints has committed to contribute £160,000 in in-kind contributions, with the council contributing £90,000 over the three years leading up to the tournament.

The council says hosting of the event in St Helens could also contribute to other strategic initiatives, such as the regeneration of the town centre and raising the profile of St Helens.

The tournament will also link to public health messages where sport is a key means of delivering healthy living campaigns.

Cabinet is expected to note the progress of the bid at its meeting on Wednesday.
