POLICE are investigating following reports a woman had an "unknown substance" thrown at her as she walked her dog in a park. 

The woman, who is in her 30s, was in Gaskell Park, Parr at just before 10am today, Tuesday, October, 23.

Police say a man is believed to have thrown some form of liquid towards her.

The woman was not seriously injured but suffered reddening to her face.

She has since been discharged from hospital. 

Tonight police said a 57-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

She has been taken to a police station to be interviewed. 

Emergency crews - including police, fire crews and an ambulance - were at the scene.

A large cordon was in place at the park.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 10.10am.

"We have taken a woman in her late 30s to hospital with burns to her body.

"The incident is being dealt with by police."

Police could be seen on Chancery Lane as part of their investigation.

Officers are carrying out tests as they attempt to confirm the nature of the substance.

Witnesses reported seeing a woman being taken to hospital.

One said: "An ambulance turned up and put a white sheet over a wheelchair.

"The next thing a lovely innocent soul over the road was in it with a dressing round her face and her forehead. She's always polite - I hope she'll be OK."

Police aded: "Enquiries are ongoing to identify the substance and the person responsible."
