A GREAT great grandmother-of-two has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Ellen Weir, who spent most of her life in Mosley Common, was treated to a buffet lunch on Thursday with wartime music playing where she lives at Bedford Care Home in Leigh.
She also received a birthday card from the Queen and a telegram from the Department for Work and Pensions.
Ellen met her future husband John in Mosley Common, and after getting married in April 1939 at Holy Family Church in Boothstown, they went on to have nine children.
Her youngest daughter Zita, 55, said: "Growing up my mum was very kind-hearted and caring. "She is very well-loved and never has a day without having a visitor.
"My dad died in 1994 and they were the most fantastic supportive parents ever.
"Mum also had the most beautiful singing voice and used to be a member of the Holy Family Church Choir as well as singing around the house to us when we were younger.
"She was quite reserved and never wanted to sing on stage on her own."
Ellen, who has 24 grandchildren and around 30 great grandchildren, worked as a mill girl before she got married.
A social media post about her birthday has been shared worldwide in countries including America, Australia and in Japan by her grandson Kenny.
