AN investigation has been launched after a machete was swung at shop workers at two different stores in the space of half an hour.

A man entered the ARG Food and Wine Store on Hardybutts in Wigan and made demands before swinging the weapon towards the assistant.

The staff were unharmed and the offender fled the shop empty-handed towards Darlington Street East.

Around half an hour later, it is believed the same offender went into the RS McColls Convenience Store on Warrington Road and brandished a knife at a shop worker.

The assistant was forced to hand over cash and cigarettes.

Police have released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with both incidents.

The attempted robbery at ARG Food and Wine Store happened at 6.45am on Saturday, September 29, with the second one at RS McColls Convenience Store taking place half an hour later.

Detective Constable Brendan Greally, of GMP’s Wigan borough, said: “The offender showed absolutely no regard for the victims as he subjected them to a terrifying attack as he threatened them with machetes.

"Thankfully no-one was injured but the actions of this man could have easily had devastating consequences.

"I would encourage anyone with any information to come forward so we can ensure the individual responsible is held accountable for his actions.”
