TWO men have been taken to hospital after what has been described as a "serious accident" involving two cars on Liverpool Road this morning.

A road closure both ways on the A58 had been in place after the crash which took place shortly before 7am between Garswood Road and Liverpool Road at Pewfall traffic lights.

Police attended and cleared the road, which has since been reopened. 

The crash involved a Honda Civic and a Skoda Fabia and one man was trapped in one of the vehicles and was rescued by the fire service.

A North West Ambulance spokeswoman said a man in his late 20s was taken to Royal Edward Infirmary with what is described as "a shoulder injury".

Meanwhile a man in his 50s was taken to Aintree Hospital with "chest injuries" described as "major trauma".

A police spokesman said: "The road was blocked until 7.30am and has been cleared now. 

"The ambulance were on the scene and two have been taken to hospital." 

The closure affected traffic heading between the East Lancs Road and the M6 at junction 24.
