A GROUP of pensioners are seeking former childhood friends from Wargrave School.

The group met in 1951 at the Infants’ School and remained classmates as they progressed to nearby Wargrave CE Junior School from 1954 until 1958.

Plans for a reunion were triggered by a class photograph from 1957, discovered five years ago by ex-pupil Tom Hulmes.

With help from former classmate Les Powell, more than half of the 40 children in the photo were traced in the UK and overseas including Canada and Australia.

For the past two years, around a dozen from the UK have held an annual reunion at the Nine Arches pub on Legh Street, where they plan to hold their third event from 1pm on Thursday, October 4.

Les Powell, who now lives in Essex, said: “This year, we are extending invitations beyond our class to anyone who went to either of the two schools in the 1950s because there’s a strong possibility that someone in our group will know them, their siblings and their families.”
