MUSIC lovers will be able to rejoice at St Mary the Virgin’s Church, Leigh on Saturday in support of a cancer charity.

Parkside Colliery Male Voice Choir will be performing at the St Mary’s Way church from 7.30pm with proceeds going to Prostate Cancer UK.

The choir, which was set up more than 45 years ago at the colliery, is made up of more than 30 men, including some who have had prostate cancer.

Chris Chadwick, who volunteers for Prostate Cancer UK, and lives in Leigh, said: “The choir are delighted to be raising awareness and much needed money for Prostate Cancer UK.

"Several members of the choir have unfortunately been affected by prostate cancer, or are at an age now where they are at risk.

"It is vital that we work together and help stop prostate cancer being a killer.”

The choir entertain audiences across the country and regularly perform at mining-related events, memorial services and dedications.

Director of fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, James Beeby, said: “It’s fantastic to see that the Male Voice Choir has decided to organise this event to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

"It is an incredible effort, one that will help us make prostate cancer a disease that the next generation of men do not fear.

“Currently one man dies every 45 minutes from prostate cancer in the UK.

"That’s more than 11,000 men a year and by 2030, prostate cancer is set to become the most commonly diagnosed cancer of all in the UK.

"So whatever you do together, big or small, you’ll be helping us push for real change, from more effective testing to better treatments.”

Tickets for the event are priced at £8 and are on sale in advance at the church, Bradshawgate Cafe and Central Cafe at Leigh Market.

They can also be paid for on the door, which will be open at 6.30pm on the day.
