THE Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says it is investigating an incident in which a builder sustained serious injuries while working at a gymnastics centre on Monday afternoon (September 17).

North West Ambulance Service attended the St Helens Centre for Gymnastics on the Sherdley Road Industrial estate shortly after 2.30pm after a builder working at the site was injured.

The builder was taken to hospital by road, with an air ambulance having also been deployed.

HSE is responsible for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare.

A spokesperson for HSE said: “HSE is aware of the incident and investigating.”

In a statement, the St Helens Centre for Gymnastics said: "You may or may not be aware that yesterday the builder who was working on the viewing area had an accident and sustained serious injuries.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with both him and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery.

"We want to confirm that centre is open and safe for your children to attend.

"The company have assured us the work will be completed but not to original schedule. We are meeting with them in next few days and will communicate new completion date when known.

"We thank you for your patience & understanding on this matter".

A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance said: "We were called at 2.34pm on Monday to a workplace incident.

"We sent the air ambulance and a road ambulance to the scene. The road ambulance took the patient to Aintree University Hospital."
