WIDNES Vikings boss Francis Cummins is not over-awed by the travel to Toronto and Toulouse in the Qualifiers.

Vikings finished their regular campaign with a 16th consecutive defeat, but now they begin the scrap for Super League survival.

Although they finished bottom of the pile, that counts for nothing now as they joining fellow top flight sides Leeds, Hull KR and Salford in taking on the Championship top four Toronto, London, Toulouse and Halifax.

The top three in the seven-match league will secure their Super League spot for next year.

The teams finishing fourth and fifth will play for the last spot in the Million Pound Game.

Discussing the travel challenge facing Vikings, Cummins said: “We are where we are, where we are going to go gets dictated to us.

“The challenge is that we have to go to those places and win.

“Other teams have done it, so why can’t we?”

Vikings, who have strengthened their side with the addition of Harrison Hansen from Leigh, Liam Finn from Wakefield and Charlie Gubb from Canberra, will battle to preserve their place.

Gubb, 28, has played almost 50 games in the NRL.

At 6 ft 2, and almost 17 stone, the Kiwi enforcer will bring further size and power to the Vikings forward line.

Cummins said: “Charlie is a no-nonsense front rower with an appetite for chasing people down. He has the power and desire to assert himself on his opponents and, naturally, these are qualities that we want to add to our team.

“His signing, along with those of Harrison Hansen and Liam Finn, have given us options and depth that we’ve lacked all season.

“Charlie brings maturity and experience to the team, and that will help to influence and support our own talented young front-rowers. He will improve the team, in terms of how we perform both on and off the field.”
