WHILE Warrington crews were giving their all in Saturday’s annual regatta, former clubmate Lucy Glover was among the medals at the World Rowing Under 23s Championships.

The River Mersey, which played host to 98 crews from 12 clubs across the north of England, proved to be a wonderful training ground for 19-year-old Edinburgh University student Glover.

She has added to the World Rowing U23 Championships gold medal of last year in the women’s quadruple sculls with a bronze in Poznan, Poland, this time around.

Along with Saskia Budgett, Kyra Edwards and Zoë Adamson, Glover’s crew came home first in their heat but were defeated by winners Romania (6mins 40.97secs) and Netherlands (6.43.88) in the final after clocking 6.45.68.

Back at Howley, more than 70 Warrington Rowing Club members competed in their own annual regatta, recording seven wins in very low water levels.

“The water levels of the Mersey have been up and down recently, but they were particularly low making it very difficult to get boats and crews on and off the water, but with the excellent support provided by volunteers and understanding crews, the races all went ahead without a hitch.”

He added: “We are now looking forward to continuing to compete as a club across the UK over the summer and autumn months, and then to our own winter event – The Head of The Mersey – which takes place in February.”

Clr Karen Elizabeth Mundry, Mayor of Warrington, attended the regatta to show her support.
