AN eight-year-old boy whose best friend died last month following a long battle with leukaemia, has been given an award for his loyalty.

Nine-year-old Alex Prescott and eight-year-old Lewis Taylor both from Parr were inseparable, even when Alex had to be in hospital for treatment.

Lewis even visted Alex up to three times a week in hospital and Facetime called his best friend everyday, so when Alex died on Tuesday, June 12 - Lewis was understandably heartbroken.

However, his loyalty to Alex did not go unnoticed and kind-hearted Allanson Street pupil Lewis was given an award by his cub scout leader at the 6th St Helens Parr group.

Awarding Lewis scout leader Phil Shields, said: “He deserves everything. He is a fantastic son, brother, friend and cub.

“Scouting is all about putting others before yourself and helping others and Lewis clearly displayed that with his best friend.

“He is a credit to his family.”

Lewis’ proud mum Lyndsey Taylor, 31, added: “Alex being gone has hit Lewis very hard because from when Alex started at Allanson Street, they were best friends. Lewis didn’t have to be Alex’s friend, he decided that on his own and Alex is the only best friend he’s ever had.

“He remained loyal to him - even when Alex was at his most poorly.

“Night times are the hardest, he can’t really understand why Alex can’t answer the phone, so this award might seem small, but it’s recognising how much of a kind boy he is. He is close to Alex’s family too, his brothers especially, so we do keep in contact - we are like a big family because of their friendship.

“I’m sure Alex would be proud of him.”

Alex’s parents Michelle and James Prescott took to Facebook to praise Lewis.

Michelle said: “Well done Lewis, I’m proud of you too, you deserve it buddy. Alex will be made up for you too.”

James added: “Well proud of you Lew! Well done matey. Alex is smiling down on you, well deserved and well earned that award.”
