VISITORS to Liverpool this weekend are being warned to plan their travel in advance.

With Liverpool FC set to take on Real Madrid in Saturday's UEFA Champions League Final, the match is set to be shown on big screens across the city.

Liverpool also hosts the Tall Ships Regatta across the Bank Holiday Weekend with tens of thousands expected to travel into the city.

And on the same day, RMT strike action will severely limit the number of Northern trains operating to and from Liverpool, with amended timetables in place and few trains running after the early evening.

Sharon Keith, regional director at Northern, said: “We know there will be thousands of Liverpool fans who want to travel to the city to watch the final and soak up the atmosphere – and there will be just as many people wanting to see the splendour of the tall ships.

“We’ll do everything we can to run services to get people to Liverpool, but we won’t have our usual number of trains running and there will be no Northern trains later in the evening to get people home again.

“We really need people to think carefully about their travel, make sure they have plans to get to and from the city and consider whether trains are the best option for them.”
