THE future of St Helens' Poundworld shops is uncertain after reports revealed the chain is considering closing 100 of its stores.

National reports stated that the discount retailer could close more than a quarter of its 355 shops across the country.

Poundworld is expected to announce proposals for a Company Voluntary Arrangement, according to national reports.

If this proceeds, it is understood Poundworld would close as many as 100 shops nationwide.

While the company would seek to redeploy as many affected staff as possible, hundreds of jobs would expected to be lost.

St Helens has Poundworld shops at the Hardshaw Centre and St Helens Retail Park.

When asked by the Star, a Poundworld spokeswoman said that closures have not yet been confirmed and would not comment when queried over the future of the St Helens shops.
