AN "ADMINISTRATIVE error" saw Northern Rail charge more than £500 for a 15-mile journey from Rainford station.
The 15-mile journey from Rainford to Birkenhead Park was available at a cost of £535 by Northern over the weekend, more than 100 times the regular price.
The hour-long journey normally costs £5.20 via the National Rail website.
A return trip from Rainford to Birkenhead Park was charged as £1,070.
A spokesman for Northern Rail said that the enormous charges were down to an "administrative error" and added it had now been "resolved".
"It was an administrative error that has been corrected now," he said.
