A WOMAN and a young girl have suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car off North Road.

Officers were called to Crab Street, St Helens at around 5.20pm today, Monday, March 12, to reports of a collision between a black Fiat Punto and blue Vauxhall Vivaro van.

The Punto then collided with the 43-year-old woman and the seven-year-old girl close to the junction with North Road.

They have been taken to hospital where they are receiving treatment for their injuries.

On Tuesday morning a police spokesman said the woman remained in a "critical condition", while the girl was "serious but stable". 

The drivers of the vehicles stopped at the scene and are helping police with enquiries.

The scene was directly opposite St Mary's Lowe House Church and a pharmacy.

A huge police presence was at the scene earlier afte the collision unfolded.

A damaged black car appeared to have come to a halt near to the pharmacy and a bus stop.

One wrote on Twitter: "It was all very sad to see and I do hope the lady and the girl make a full recovery. With thoughts and prayers to their families."

Another added: "Thoughts are with them and all involved at this difficult time."
