A WORLDWIDE organisation of professional women which strives to improve the lives of girls and women is hosting a special event at St Helens Town Hall.

Soroptimists are hosting a programme of activities to mark International Women's Day on Saturday, March 10, from 10am to 3pm.

Pamela Wright, OBE, president elect of Soroptimists International St Helens, said: "This event will endeavour to tap into the interest of all women yet the whole family is welcome.

"We empower, educate and enable girls and women to achieve their potential through our service, fundraising and social activities.

"There will be a programme of activities throughout the day such as 'try something different' which will showcase things from diving to badminton.

"The main hall will have a variety of stalls from local women offering handmade goods from designer baby and toddler clothes to journals and cards."

St Helens College, a major partner supporting the event, will be offering various pampering treatments such as mini facials, massages and mini manicures. Students will also serve refreshments.

It is a chance for people to do some shopping or buy unusual or unique gifts for Mother's Day as well as Easter cards and gifts.

Various other activities highlighting safety, healthy eating and wellbeing and education will be available.

Local groups will also have a chance to promote themselves.

Admission is £1 which will be used to support local charities and projects.

The women's refuge, St Helens Carers, Macmillan Cancer Support and TS Scimitar are just some the many causes the organisation has donated money to over the years.

The Soroptimists will be planting a tree in front of St Helens Cemetery to mark their 75th anniversary and the town's 150th birthday.
