A MAN who was taken to hospital in a critical condition has died following an alleged assault in the town centre, police have confirmed.

The man, from Liverpool, who was 60, died this morning (Tuesday, December 5).

He suffered a suspected bleed on the brain following the incident on Baldwin Street, St Helens in the early hours of Saturday.

A police spokesperson said: "The family are being supported by specially trained officers.

"A Home Office post mortem will take place to establish the cause of death later today."

A 56-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault following the incident was since released pending further enquiries.

Detectives are keen to hear from anyone who was in the Pizza Chef takeaway restaurant, Baldwin Street at around 12.30am on Saturday morning or in the A to B taxi rank opposite.
