A 60-YEAR-OLD man is in a critical condition after he suffered serious head injuries in an alleged assault in the early hours.

The victim was taken to Whiston Hospital with a suspected bleed on the brain.

Police were called to a taxi rank on Baldwin Street at 12.30am by paramedics.

On arrival officers arrested a 56-year-old St Helens man on suspicion of assault.

Detectives believe the men may have been part of the same group on a night out.

A police statement read: “The victim was taken to Whiston Hospital with a suspected bleed on the brain.

“He remains in a critical condition.

The families of both men have been informed.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened however detectives believe the men were part of the same group on a night out.
