IT has been an amazing year for 11-year-old George Mathias, who has shown that brotherly love knows no limits by running 100 miles with a host of celebrities and raising more than £50,000 for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

After winning another award to add to his growing collection, the proud school pupil said he was “amazed” he won the vote.

He collected the community star gong alongside his seven-year-old brother James, who inspired his actions.

Pride of Britain Award winner George undertook the challenge to thank the Liverpool hospital for saving James’ life after he was born seven weeks premature and spent five days in a coma.

George has run with celebrities such as Liverpool FC legends Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher and is delighted his efforts have been recognised by his home town.

The excited schoolboy said: “To win this is amazing. I really wasn’t expecting to win but I am very proud.

“It’s so great to be recognised by the town I was born and raised in.

“Thank you to the people of St Helens and everyone who voted for James and I – it’s great that our town has voted for us.

“It is lovely to be invited to events like this.

“Thank you so much.”

His mum Sue said: “It is brilliant that he has won.

“As you can see they are both very excited.

“I was even more stressed for this awards ceremony than the Pride of Britain one because we didn’t know if he had won this one – with that one we got told beforehand.

“So when his name was read out and he jumped up and went up there with James, I was so proud of both of them.

“It is lovely that he keeps getting recognised for all he is doing.”

Their dad Richard said: “George loves doing this.

“They have met so many amazing people and really made such a difference at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

“He said he wants to keep doing it, especially since the next two big names on his list to run with are hopefully Jürgen Klopp and Johnny Vegas.

“As a family we would like to thank everyone who voted for George.

“He makes us very proud.”
