FORMER firefighter Rod Dixon has sent in a query to the Star about a memorial plaque that he is trying to trace.

He wrote: “I was a fireman at the former Sutton Oak depot until the end of steam when I moved to become a driver at Speke Junction.

“Whilst at Sutton Oak there was a Memorial to the Fallen in the Wars. With the closure, the plaque was moved to the Staff Association Club in Penlake Lane.

“With the closure and demolition of the buildings I was wondering did somebody recover this memorial?

“The same thing happened at the Speke depot when it closed in 1994. The plaque was moved to the Staff Club in Burnshall Street, Garston until last year when this too was closed but the members were able to place the plaque in a local church.

“I thought if the Sutton Oak one could be traced it could be placed in St Helens Central Station or Morrisons Store Sutton in memory of the 100 years since the end of the war.”

Can anyone help to trace its whereabouts?

n Sumer is Icumen In is the oldest known song in the English Language, written in the Wessex Dialect of Middle English. It’s time to play my four CDs of Morris music, Morris On, Son of Morris On, Grandson of Morris On, and Great Grandson of Morris On. They are all produced by Ashley Hutchings.

I was pleasantly surprised to realise there are no less than three Morris Dance Groups in the Borough. Mucky Mountains Morris are from Newton. Dances are mainly in the Cotswold and Border traditions. Carouselles Morris Dancers are based in Bidston Avenue, and the Rimilia Royals, based at Chain Lane Community Centre, travel every Saturday to various competitions throughout the North West.

n Ray Waring informs me there is family day with market and bric-a-brac stalls at Rainford X Sports & Social Club, 11am to 4pm on Sunday, May 21. There will be a bouncy castle, games and a metal detecting area.
