JOHNNY Vegas has been out and about in St Helens to record a new comedy for BBC Radio 4.

Written and directed by the Thatto Heath Thespian, Vegas was joined by the cast and crew at Metcalfe's shop on Fir Street on Monday to record some of the the semi-autobiographical story, described as an "adventure comedy".

The tale sees money tighter than ever in the Pennington household and no one is feeling the pinch more than Johnny. But when a shop keeper reveals the existence of a dumping ground for shop soiled confectionary plans are hatched to seek out the 'toffee tip'.

Vegas, who has branched out in to writing, directing and acting following a hugely successful career as a stand up comedian, also recorded at the St Helens Transport Museum and in Merton Bank. One of the stars of the hit TV show Benidorm he has also directed a critically acclaimed radio version of This Sporting Life.

His new programme is due to be aired on Thursday, September 3.
