I HAVE just returned from St Helens town centre after a rare visit and once again it struck me what a poor relation we are to Warrington and Wigan.

Warrington not only has Golden Square but also has a massive new redevelopment programme starting.

The people of St Helens have repeatedly voted in a Labour Party who have let us down. For my whole lifetime our town centre has suffered with a complete lack of foresight and investment. Yes we are getting a new Aldi and retail park but it is not exactly integrated directly with the rest of the centre.

We have more than our fair share of empty units, fast food outlets, bars, betting shops and charity shops housed inside of outdated scruffy buildings.

Am I alone in finding the option of a green town centre offered up by the Green Party prior to the election really appealing?

Surely now is the time for those elected to pull their fingers out and completely revamp our centre to attract more attractive retailers, which would improve footfall and income.

Until this happens I and many like me will continue to vote with our car wheels and take our hard-earned cash elsewhere.
