FIREFIGHTERS were called out to tackle a large blaze after arsonists torched a pile of rubbish.

The firebugs struck just before 10pm last night (Thursday, April 9) on land near Jackson Street, St Helens.

The pile of rubbish was around five metres wide and a metre high and a fire crew from St Helens had to use a high pressure hose to tackle the blaze.

Watch manager Dave Topping, who attended the call out, said: "This was several tonnes of rubbish on fire on rough ground near to Jackson Street.

"Smoke was drifting towards buildings in the area and could have affected traffic on roads. We investigate fires we are called out to and work with the police to help to find those responsible for setting fires deliberately."

Firefighters had left the scene by 10.36pm.
