BRIGHT primary pupils fought it out in a quiz event held at Hope Academy.
Teams of five children from nine primaries in the borough assembled at the high school, in Newton-le-Willows, for the fourth annual Quiz Kids Challenge.
A group of year five students from St Mary's Catholic Junior School, in Newton-le-Willows, took the top spot, with a closely fought battle for second place.
A spokesperson from Hope Academy said: "In a keenly-fought contest St Mary's emerged as the winners of the Champions' Shield, with a three-way tie for second having to be decided by a tie breaker question.
"St Lewis' Catholic Primary School battled through to second place, with St Catherine of Siena Catholic Primary School edging out St Peter's for third."
Also taking part were Newton-le-Willows Primary School, Lyme Community Primary School, Wargrave C of E Primary School, The District C of E Primary School and St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School.
Patrick Ferguson, principal of Hope Academy, made the presentations, and the winners' trophy was accepted on behalf of St Mary's by teacher Rachel Woods.
The spokesperson added: "Congratulations to the children of all the schools who took part in the contest - and thanks to their teachers for making their participation possible."
