IN response to R Lloyd’s Star letter (March 20) regarding the peculiarities of the King Street/North Road/College Street roundabout in the town centre.
I am aware of the fairly new change in road markings here on the approach from King Street advising drivers for College Street to stay right.
This frankly comes as a strange suggestion for young and less confident drivers who I know feel more comfortable to “trundle” around the inside lane.
Lane markings such as these, while helpful cannot be relied upon to be followed by drivers and while I fully appreciate the sentiment expressed by Mr Lloyd in his 44-tonne lorry, he must not “second guess” other drivers – but instead pull out “when safe to do so”.
Additionally there does seem to be an increasing tendency in the locality for drivers to adopt an accelerate hard/brake hard driving style and a lack of “anticipation” especially approaching traffic lights.
We would all be much better off, with regard to safety and economy, if speed could be regulated sensibly with more judicious use of the “gas” and brake pedals.
