LABOUR comfortably held Billinge ward in yesterday's by-election and UKIP beat the Tories for second place.
It means Labour's Dennis McDonnell is elected to the seat that was vacated by Alison Bacon earlier in the year.
He polled 936 votes in a by-election which saw a turn out of just 19.8per cent.
Other candidates were: Laurence Christopher Allen – UK Independence Party (442 votes) Alan Brindle – British National Party (73) John Çunliffe – Conservative Party (248) Noreen Knowles – Liberal Democrat Party (52) Sue Rahman – The Green Party (94).
