MOUNT Athos owned by Rainford millionaire businessman Dr Marwan Koukash gamely battled to third place in Australia's Melbourne Cup run over two miles and one of the world's richest horse races.
Starting at odds of 13-1, the Newmarket-trained raider Mount Athos improved on fifth spot in last year's event at Flemington to run on into third behind favourite Fiorente and another British raider Red Cadeaux.
Trainer Luca Cumani said he was pleased with the six-year-old gelding's effort, although he believed his draw in stall 22 had hardly helped his chance.
But Mount Athos still enjoyed a mighty payday, picking up $416,032 for Dr Koukash. The winner earned a whopping $3,328,255 prize.
Earlier Dr Koukash had tweeted: "Few hours to go for the biggest race on earth. Mount Athos in great shape and in a very happy mood this morning. Should run a big race."
