A PROMISING singer has won the chance to perform before an audience of more than 300 guests at Langtree Park during Friday’s Solar King Pride of St Helens Awards.

Emma Nicholson, a 16-year-old Haydock High pupil, was crowned Jamm Studios Young Musician of the Year earlier this month.

After the dozens of entrants were whittled down to six finalists through online voting, the young performers all shone in front of a judging panel.

But Emma’s renditions of Jessie J’s Do It Like A Dude and Rihanna’s Stay proved the most impressive.

Emma said: “I’m so shocked, I can’t believe it. I enjoyed the whole process so much and I can’t wait to perform at Pride of St Helens.”

She was invited to Tyrers for a makeover and hair styling in preparation for the big night. The store also fitted the GCSE student with an evening dress and shoes.

A glittering ceremony, organised by the Steve Prescott Foundation and supported by media partners the St Helens Star, will celebrate the brilliance, heroism and talent of townspeople.

Among the contenders for the 13 categories are household names such Johnny Vegas, Martin Murray, Willowbrook Hospice as well a host of emerging talents, local heroes and community stars, each of which was profiled in last week’s newspaper.

Also on the entertainment line-up are rising stars Stillia, who will bring tracks from their latest EP as well as a selection of covers to the awards.

Frontman Jack Bennett said: “We are honoured to be asked to play Pride of St Helens. We love supporting our hometown and it’s looking to be a great night.

“We’re releasing our new EP at The Citadel the week after the awards so it’s going to be a great couple of weeks for the band.”

Meanwhile, young tenor Tom Loughlin, who is nominated for the Imperial Arts Award, will also be singing.

Organisers have thanked Timpsons, courtesy of Alan Foster, who are providing awards for all nominees.

Imperial Bar & Dancefloor, which is hosting the after show party, are donating 50p off every drink sold on Friday to the Steve Prescott Foundation.
