THE nominees for the St Helens College Outstanding Academic Achievement are:

Elizabeth Butler

Elizabeth Butler may have had plenty of hurdles put in her path during her schooling – but she has done everything to overcome them.

She was born with cerebral palsy and was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 11.

Her time at high school was a battle with anxiety – meaning she had to spend time studying from home.

But despite her problems, Elizabeth left school with seven GCSEs at A to C grade, completed a two-year art course at St Helens College and secured a place studying animation at Edge Hill University.

Luke Schofield

Luke Schofield moved to St Helens College after studying at Lansbury Bridge School in Parr, which teaches youngsters with special educational needs.

He is proving to be a computer whizz and has gained a series of qualifications in IT.

He is described by tutors as ‘an exemplary student’ and has challenged others with similar backgrounds to take part in college events and follow the path he has taken.

Megan Crosby

There are not many 11-year-olds who count Albert Einstein as an idol.

But Megan Crosby, from Clock Face, does. Perhaps it is because of her love of maths. Her SATS exam results have left teachers plotting a potential early start date for her GCSEs.

Such is her dedication that it has persuaded her parents to go to night classes to get qualifications that will take them to university.

Megan’s ambition is to become a mathematician.
