THERE are some great rugby sides of yesteryear who have celebrated tasting Challenge Cup success with a civic reception at St Helens Town Hall.

But on this occasion it was the town’s rugby girls rather than the hard men of Saints who were flying the flag.

Thatto Heath St Helens Women’s Rugby League team were invited to the mayor’s parlour to toast their trophy success.

Mayor of St Helens Councillor Andy Bowden was thrilled with their 54-12 win over Bradford Thunderbirds in the final of the Women’s Challenge Cup at Batley in June.

And he marked the civic welcome by scrumming down with them outside the town hall steps.

The mayor said: “I was delighted to welcome the squad to the town hall to celebrate their victory “It was important to mark this fantastic achievement.

“I also wanted to wish them luck with their remaining fixtures – and I hope to see them in the Grand Final too.”
