A CAMPAIGN which aims to prevent teenagers becoming victims of abusive relationships is being backed by St Helens Council.

The Home Office drive urges young people to re-think their views about what is acceptable behaviour from a partner.

It covers subjects such as violence, abuse or controlling behaviour in relationships.

The campaign website – thisisabuse.direct.gov.uk, gives teenagers the chance to discuss issues with their peers and get access to support and advice.

Local campaign material has been produced by St Helens Council, including a leaflet with advice on caring relationships and abusive behaviour.

There are also contact details for people who need help either as an abuser or someone who is being abused.

Councillor Richard McCauley said: “Abusive relationships can destroy someone’s self-confidence and have a negative impact on their health and wellbeing.

“Many people might not realise that they are in an abusive relationship, so hopefully the campaign will flag up some of the warning signs and enable them to make changes to their lives.”
