TRIBUTES have been paid to a Prescot councillor who has passed away at the age of 74 after a long illness.
Councillor Derek McEgan was elected as a ward member for Prescot West in 1987, serving for 12 years on a range of Knowsley Council committees.
After a gap of 13 years, he was again elected in May 2012 – this time for Prescot East.
He was a key member of a working group looking at the provision of care and support offered to local people upon leaving hospital.
Councillor McEgan was also a dedicated town councillor on Prescot Town Council.
He is survived by his wife Margaret and three sons Michael, Paul and Mark.
The Leader of Knowsley Council, Councillor Ron Round, said: “It is so sad that Derek has passed away and our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family.
“He was a great champion for local people and made a huge contribution to the community.”
The funeral will take place on Tuesday, January 22 at noon at Our Lady Immaculate and St Joseph’s Church, Vicarage Place, Prescot.
