A 21-YEAR-OLD man accused of causing the death of a grandmother by dangerous driving has made a first appearance at Liverpool Crown Court.

Jack Chapman, of Fairfield Road, Dentons Green, faces the charge following the death of 77-year-old Maureen Keenan, who suffered fatal injuries in a car crash on St James Road, Rainhill on April 5 last year.

Mrs Keenan was just 30 seconds from home when the car she was driving was involved in the collision.

Firefighters had to be called to free people trapped in the wreckage at the crash site, near Craven Road.

Mrs Keenan, a former St Helens medical practice receptionist, who had two children and four grandchildren, died after being taken to Whiston Hospital.

Another motorist Peter Knowles, 22, of King Edward Road, Rainhill, has also been charged following the incident. He appeared at the crown court charged with dangerous driving.

Both men are expected to enter their pleas on February 28.

A trial date has been provisionally fixed to begin on June 3.
