FLASHDANCE has previously been hailed as one of the most successful musicals of all time and, following my trip to the Liverpool Empire on Monday to watch the show, I certainly wouldn’t dispute such bold claims.

Starring Strictly Come Dancing champion Joanne Clifton and A1’s Ben Adams, Flashdance - The Musical tells the tale of Alex, a determined welder who dreams of becoming a professional dancer.

While the storyline is predictable, the choreography is what keeps you hooked from start to finish. Joanne, who lifted the coveted glitterball trophy alongside her partner Ore Oduba to win the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing last year, is a triple threat – she can dance, sing and act. Yes it’s not fair.

But given her extensive background in dancing which includes being named as world champion and European ballroom dancer, it’s perhaps no surprise that she is the perfect fit for the role of Alex. Her routines were full of energy and she could seamlessly switch from impressive choreography to emotional love ballads.

Ben as Alex’s love interest Nick Hurley was also at ease as the leading man. He was charming, note-perfect and pulled off a couple of dance moves when required. While there were a few sound issues, the cast were consummate professionals and never appeared to panicked.

Thankfully the technical problems did not detract from this uplifting musical which will leave you dancing in your seats.

What a feeling.

Flashdance runs until Saturday at the Liverpool Empire. Tickets are still available to buy with prices start from £16.15. Visit atgtickets.com/venues/liverpool-empire.
