GET ready to sail the seven seas with Gemini Theatre Company.

The group, originally Warrington Light Opera, are performing the Gilbert and Sullivan classic Pirates of Penzance at Pyramid later this month.

Full of inept pirates, bumbling policemen, non-too bright young lovers and other eccentric characters, the show takes the audience on an improbable adventure set in and around the shores of Cornwall.

In a plot full of twists, turns and strange paradoxes, the young hero Frederick, inadvertently apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, plans to leave the band and devote himself to their extermination.

However, it is subsequently discovered that having been born in leap year, Frederick only has a birthday every four years and is technically bound to them until 1940.

At the same time, Frederick falls for the beautiful Mabel, the daughter of Major General Stanley.

When the Pirate King discovers that the Major General has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from stealing his property and his many beautiful daughters, he vows vengeance.

Will Frederick be able to work his way through these complexities to be free from the pirate way of life and marry the woman of his dreams?

Danny Shaw, chairman of Gemini and stage director, said: “Pirates of Penzance is full of wit and humour, as well as memorable and well-known music and represents Gilbert and Sullivan at their best.

“We have had great fun in rehearsals and are very much looking forward to performing this show at the Pyramid.”

Pirates of Penzance will be at the Pyramid Centre on Friday, April 21 at 7.30 pm and Saturday, April 22 at 2pm and 7.30pm with Steve Rayner as musical director.

The company will be supported by the Manchester Opera Orchestra.
