Poldark star Aidan Turner said he is asked every day if he will replace Daniel Craig as James Bond, but dismissed the speculation as “just rumours”.
The actor is reportedly on a shortlist of stars in the running to take over from Daniel as 007, along with Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston and Michael Fassbender.
He told Nick Grimshaw’s BBC Radio 1 breakfast show: “I do get asked a lot, daily. It’s just rumours, there is nothing in it. There is still someone else playing the role and that’s why I don’t like to talk about it. There is a James Bond. You’re chatting about someone else’s part, and Daniel Craig is well hard.”
He was joined on the radio show by his Poldark co-star Eleanor Tomlinson, who plays on-screen wife Demelza, who said she was also throwing her hat in the ring to play the spy.
“I am going to be James Bond,” she said, before adding: “A girl ginger James Bond would be great.”
Aidan also alarmed listeners when he explained to Nick about how the show films its scenes out of order, saying: “There is no order in it, you’re dying tomorrow and on Wednesday you’re getting married.”
After listeners emailed in to express concern that his character Ross Poldark would be killed off, Eleanor joked: “He does die and they rename the show Demelza.”
However, Aidan clarified that he is not expecting an untimely end for the hero, saying: “I don’t, to the best of my knowledge, die.”
Aidan also admitted he does not watch the show, based on the novels by Winston Graham, because he finds it too uncomfortable to see himself on screen.
He told Nick: “I can’t watch it, especially when it’s going out. I haven’t seen the first series. I try to forget it’s on and do something actively different. I avoid it all costs.”
He added: “No one calls me when it’s on. I don’t get good luck texts. There is radio silence in the Turner house.”
Poldark returns to BBC One on Sunday at 9pm.
