Something new came to our telly boxes this evening as ITV’s The Nick followed Sussex Police around Brighton and the surrounding areas.
We saw lots of drugs, a bit of blood and enough dirty toilets to last a life time.
Here’s what the people of Twitter were saying.
1. Police programmes need more creative names
We laughed a little more than we should have at that tweet.
2. It’s lucky the police can’t do much if they don’t actually find any drugs on you
Well, lucky for the guy who had white powder all over his face and up his nose, anyway.
3. Getting arrested can be very inconvenient
One man was unfortunate enough to get nicked before he’d had a chance to visit the bathroom, and seemed to remember that as the police put him in handcuffs.
4. Some things should not be shown if there’s even a remote chance people are eating
So we get that the police have a hard job – this was a point drilled home by an officer looking through somebody’s excrement for drugs. The thing is though, we kind of don’t want to see that. Not even a little bit.
5. But yeah, they really do put their lives at risk every day
Whether it’s storming into a drugs den without knowing what’ll greet them on the other side, or simply patrolling the town on a night – there’s a whole range of situations officers throw themselves into every day knowing it could all end very badly for them.
6. This was a bad advert for Brighton for people who’d never been there
Seriously, not everyone in Brighton is a drug dealer or a drug addict, and you won’t get glassed every time you go out for a drink. We promise.
7. We didn’t know you could get arrested for owning an Xbox
So that might not be the whole reason – the police suspected the Xbox was stolen, the same as a printer and a few more bits of hardware the man in question had in his tent.
8. A man claiming to be the bloke who got arrested for handling stolen goods shared his thoughts
Although he did seem to suggest his personal situation had changed a bit from what we saw of him on the programme, if this conversation with one of the officers in the programme is anything to go by.
9. Searching through a graveyard late at night does NOT look fun
Officers were looking for a potential “prowler”, who’d taken up hiding in the cemetery. It was all very creepy.
10. Some of the officers have a colourful vocabulary
11. And finally, there are A LOT of police programmes on TV
If you don’t believe us, The Nick was the first of two police documentaries on tonight – and you know there are whole channels pretty much dedicated to re-runs of the rest.
