One of the best-known choirs in the North West will be bursting into song at a special concert at St Helens Town Hall this Saturday (March 9).

Founded in 1923, Haydock Male Voice Choir has more than 65 members and performed to a standing ovation at the 2012 Tenby Arts Festival in West Wales.

The concert marks the choir’s 90th anniversary and they will be joined at the town hall by support acts Just Midnight and young rising vocal star Tom Loughlin.

Just Midnight are a 16-piece group of a cappella singers. Well known throughout the North West, they receive particular acclaim for their jazz music.

Tom Loughlin (son of Saints RL star Paul) was raised in Garswood and is currently studying for his GCSE exams. He hopes to study at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester before training as an operatic tenor at a conservatoire.

Tom has appeared in musicals across the North West and performed at the 2012 Christmas Lights Switch On to a packed Victoria Square crowd. He also wowed the audience at the first Pride of St Helens awards last year.

This concert forms part of the St Helens Live programme, which aims to enrich the town’s cultural diversity through live music, dance and theatre performances.

Choir secretary Alan Gaskell said: “This concert marks a special milestone in the history of one of our best-known local choirs and is a great way to bring the curtain down on the 2012/13 St Helens Live programme of music, theatre and dance events.”

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets for this special event are just £7 and available from Alan Gaskell on 01744 734176.

The choir is due to perform a second concert at St Helens Town Hall in October 2013. Following this, they will perform at the Isle of Man Festival.
