Why we need to reform House of Lords

I DISAGREE with Mr Cunliffe’s letter of last week ‘Lords reform is essential’.

We are one of only two nations worldwide that has an unelected upper house and yet we send our young people to fight in wars in the name of democracy.

Several peers are convicted criminals and yet cannot be removed! The new proposals will see elected peers without annual salaries. They will only be paid for the actual days they turn up to work. This will stop the current gravy train.

Only by electing peers can we stop political party big donors like Lord Sugar and Lord Ashcroft from shaping the laws the rest of us have to live by.
