Come and help Red Cross continue caring mission

I AM writing to your readers for volunteers to help raise funds for British Red Cross at fundraising collections in the St Helens area.

We have been kindly allocated collections at Tesco in Haydock on Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30. We are looking for local people to give two hours of their time to join our fundraisers to raise vital funds for the Red Cross.

Just two hours of your time can help save the life of someone vulnerable in crisis either here in St Helens and Merseyside or across the world.

The Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are.

The Red Cross responds to emergencies all over the world offering aid and support to communities affected by natural disasters such as the recent Samoa Tsunami, the Italian earthquake, the Australian bushfires, and the devastating earthquake, which hit Haiti this week.

Red Cross staff and volunteers have also been braving the snow and ice to provide support for vulnerable people across the county as the severe weather conditions continue.

The Red Cross medical equipment loan service, which provides items such as wheelchairs and commodes, is also experiencing higher demand due to the conditions.

Elderly people are especially prone to hypothermia and pneumonia during severe cold weather.

Unfortunately, they are also the most likely to be living in older houses without adequate heating. The Red Cross is urging people to call in regularly on elderly friends, neighbours and relatives to see if they need help staying warm or getting provisions.

If you can help at a collection, fundraising materials will be provided and we would be very grateful for your support.

Please call me on 0151 702 5061 or text COLLECT to 07921 872441 or you can email afairclough@redcross.org.uk if you can help.

Alexis Fairclough, Senior Fundraiser, British Red Cross
