Threat to historic school’s name

I am writing to tell your readers about how political correctness has overtaken the grammar school that I attended.

Prescot Grammar School, latterly just called Prescot School after becoming a comprehensive, is to be renamed "Knowsley Park Centre for Learning – serving Prescot, Whiston and the Wider Community".

This severs links with the second oldest grammar school in England having been founded in 1544.

This move by Knowsley Borough Council is an act of dogmatic and politically correct bureaucrats and seems to have nothing to do with what people in the area want.

In fact, the name of Prescot was not even included in the name until the local Prescot Town Council objected. Knowsley is not Prescot. Prescot is Prescot! I edit a contact website (www.prescotian.info) known as the Prescotian for all former pupils of Prescot Grammar, Prescot Girls Grammar and the current Prescot school.

This politically correct name change has caused consternation and anger amongst former pupils so much that today we have set up a petition as follows: “We the undersigned petition the Knowsley Borough Council to: 'reverse the decision by Knowsley borough Council to rename the historic Prescot Grammar School (founded 1544) with the name, Knowsley Park Centre for Learning – serving Prescot, Whiston and the Wider Community'
