MY name is Stephen Mars, a former pupil at Carr Mill Junior School and excited member of the group who enjoyed the flight (covered on the nostalgia page edition Thursday, July 12, when I was 10 years old.)

Unfortunately I don’t recognise any classmates from the photos although I do have fond memories of head teacher Douglas Appleton.

Mr Appleton had a great inspirational talent with school projects and generating media attention, those that instantly come to mind were the flight - a first for the time- and the bouncing egg.  The bouncing egg proved the theory that eggs won’t break, just bounce, if dropped then land at either end as opposed to landing on the weaker side wall then they just smash.

As headmaster Mr Appleton was a happy and pleasant individual who was respected by all while being extremely approachable, a true gentleman.
