Useless and unnecessary

11:32am Thursday 9th August 2007

I AM amazed and stunned at the stupidity of our council for considering wasting £700,000 on a useless, unnecessary, so called work of art 'Our Angel' (Star front page July 26).

Our hospitals and hospices are in need of urgent medical equipment, scanners, MRI and CT scanners and other lifesaving machines, plus the staff to operate them.

We have no community facilities, no youth clubs to keep our youth population entertained. No sports facilities or swimming baths, which we were promised many years ago for our community in Haydock.

We have a rugby club (Haydock Rugby Club), that has been asking for some land and assistance to build a club and create a new rugby pitch for a team of dedicated players and trainers who have kept the teams going all these years.

We have no community police station and police officers are a rare commodity around Haydock these days.

Our community hospital was shut down many years ago because of the lack of money to keep it going, but now we can squander £700,000 on some worthless piece of art that is of no benefit to the community whatsoever.

Councillors, stop treating us like second class citizens and idiots. Put the money to better use and fulfil the promises that some of your colleagues promised to Haydock and St Helens many years ago.

Give the money to the hospices/hospitals and build some sports facilities.

GLYNN Mayhew, Wrigley Road, St Helens.
