BEFORE 1974 local councillors were were typically elderly men who did the job for the honour of serving their local community.
And typically they did the jobs very well.
I would suggest St Helens councillors could once again do the job for free and the money saved could be used to pay lollipop ladies, who are typically old age pensioners on the basic state pension and who, therefore, have a genuine need for more money.
