I WAS reading with interest the latest St Helens Council decision to axe funding for the local school crossing patrol from August 2018.
We’re all aware of the huge savings all local councils are facing and the enormous pressure being placed on them, by this Conservative Government, meaning they have to cut spending while still maintaining a level of service fit for purpose.
I completely disagree with this concept, however in the face of cuts to vital services such as adult social care, education and environmental services, the school crossing patrol was always going to be next on the conveyor belt of St Helens Council axed services.
The optimist in me hopes that St Helens Council and the bunch of mainly retired school crossing patrol operatives, decide to group together and carry it on, on a voluntary basis.
However, I won’t be holding my breath.
