I HAD the pleasure as a 14-year-old of being at Tom van Vollenhoven’s first match against Leeds and watching him scoring his first try.
I was also at Odsal in 1959 when, seemingly trapped on the touchline in his own 25 by several Hunslet players, he beat all of them before racing from the halfway line as Saints came back from 12-4 down to win 44-22.
A brilliant finisher who put the club before himself. RIP.
